How Murmur was made
Six hundred digital starlings over a dusk gradient, spelling words they were never taught. One canvas, no libraries, no image files.
View the site โWhat it demonstrates
That emergent motion beats authored motion. Nothing in the sky is keyframed โ every swirl comes from three local steering rules per bird, and the letterforms are just a fourth, temporary urge. The page treats the simulation honestly: the copy below the canvas explains the real science and admits that real starlings do not spell.
Techniques, honestly named
- Boids โ Craig Reynolds' separation, alignment, and cohesion rules, with a uniform spatial grid so 600 birds stay at 60fps.
- Wandering attractor โ a slow noise-driven lure point that keeps the free flock reading as one dense cloud.
- Letterform targets โ words drawn to an offscreen canvas, opaque pixels sampled as points, birds assigned by x-order and steered with arrival behaviour.
- Procedural scenery โ the dusk gradient, sun glow, ground line, and recursive bare trees are all drawn in code from a seeded PRNG.
- Respectful fallbacks โ prefers-reduced-motion renders a still flock; the loop pauses when the tab is hidden; devicePixelRatio is capped at 2.
