The grid is the message
How postwar Switzerland turned page layout into an ethics.

The International Typographic Style — the Swiss style — hardened in Zurich and Basel in the 1950s around a radical claim: design should transmit information, not the designer’s mood. Its instruments were the modular grid, asymmetric layout, photography over illustration, and sans-serif type, first the stolid Akzidenz-Grotesk of 1896, later Helvetica and Univers, both born in 1957.
Josef Müller-Brockmann codified the doctrine in Grid Systems in Graphic Design; Emil Ruder and Armin Hofmann drilled it into students at Basel. The grid was pitched as neutrality, but neutrality was the style — a visible order so strict it became the loudest voice on the page. Corporations noticed: by the 1970s the objective Swiss page was the global uniform of banks and airlines. This newspaper is set on a hard twelve-column grid, gutters ruled in ink, in its honor.

The em dash is named for its width: one em, a unit equal to the point size of the type — at 12 point, an em is 12 points wide. Its half-width sibling is the en. Printers once filled space with metal quadrats of the same measure, so the names describe hardware, not fashion.
The dash interrupts, appends, swerves — the most theatrical mark in the case. Robert Bringhurst, in The Elements of Typographic Style, calls the unspaced em dash a Victorian habit and prefers the spaced en dash. And lately the em dash stands accused of being a machine’s tell. The record shows it kept human company in print for centuries before any of us wired a single perceptron — acquit it.

In 1977 Donald Knuth saw the phototypeset galleys for a new edition of The Art of Computer Programming and found them unworthy of the mathematics. He expected to fix typesetting in a sabbatical. It took roughly a decade and produced TeX, the METAFONT type-design system, and the Computer Modern family.
TeX breaks paragraphs the way no compositor could: the Knuth–Plass algorithm weighs every possible arrangement of a paragraph at once and picks the one with the least total “badness.” The version number converges to π — currently 3.141592653 — and METAFONT’s to e. Errors earn the finder a check in hexadecimal dollars. Few are cashed; the paper is worth more than the amount.

The small letters you are reading descend from a script standardized in Charlemagne’s scriptoria in the late eighth century — Carolingian minuscule, pushed by Alcuin of York from Tours. Clear bowls, ascenders, descenders, space between words: an imperial legibility program.
Six centuries on, Italian humanists found manuscripts in the script and mistook them for ancient Rome, naming the hand littera antiqua and copying it proudly. When printing arrived in Venice, Nicolas Jenson cut its forms into metal around 1470, and the roman lowercase was fixed. The italic followed in 1501, cut by Francesco Griffo for Aldus Manutius to squeeze classics into pocket editions. Every “modern” paragraph is a medieval clerical reform, twice misread.
